About the Programme

Programme Scope

The Programme offers comprehensive coverage of the value chain of Aromatic and Medicinal Plants, from modern cultivation techniques, biodiversity management and the certification of propagation material, to processing, quality control and the development of high added-value final products.

 

It places particular emphasis on the production of natural-origin pharmaceutical products, cosmetics and dietary supplements, drawing on the comparative advantage of Greek flora, which is among the richest in Europe.

Establishment Gazette

The M.Sc. Programme was established in 2021, according to Government Gazette 196/Issue B/25-01-2021, and operates under its updated regulation, according to Government Gazette 2105/Issue B/2023.

 

It is implemented by the Department of Agrotechnology (School of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Thessaly), with the participation of academic staff from the Departments of

  • Medicine,
  • Biochemistry and Biotechnology,
  • Food Science and Nutrition,
  • Animal Science, 
  • Agriculture, Crop Production and Rural Environment of the University of Thessaly,
  • the Department of Pharmacology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, as well as
  • experienced researchers from ELGO-DIMITRA.
Programme Objectives

The M.Sc. Programme aims to train specialized scientists in the field of Aromatic and Medicinal Plants, providing knowledge and skills that cover cultivation, biodiversity management, processing and the development of high added-value products.

 

Through the use of modern cultivation systems, innovative technologies and the rich Greek flora, the Programme contributes to strengthening the competitiveness of producers, linking primary production with entrepreneurship and supporting the development of the national economy.
